Financial Wellness In First Nations

Prosper Canada’s Building financial wellness in First Nation communities project strengthens community-led approaches to money management by embedding financial empowerment supports where people already go for services.

Starting in 2021, we partnered with AFOA Canada, SEED Winnipeg, Community Financial Counselling Services (CFCS), and the Sudbury Community Service Centre to co-develop and pilot supports with two First Nation communities in Manitoba and two in Ontario—work generously supported by IG Wealth Management.

The goal: create culturally appropriate, practical tools and coaching that communities can adapt and scale.

Our approach centres relationships and respect.

Solutions

Together with local teams, we designed, tested, and embedded solutions—like coaching, workshops, and easy-to-use tools—into existing community services in rural and remote settings.

Scaling

The project also examined how this model could be scaled to other First Nation communities across the country, ensuring that what works locally can inform broader, community-driven financial wellness strategies.

Delivering vital tax and financial services during wildfire displacement in Indigenous communities

This past spring and summer, wildfires across Manitoba disrupted daily life for many First Nations communities, forcing evacuations and creating immense uncertainty. Despite the challenges, Community Financial Counselling Services (CFCS) and Supporting Employment and Economic Development (SEED) Winnipeg stepped up, bringing vital tax and financial supports to those most affected.
